Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a natural healthy source of fat found in coconut oil and palm kernel oil. They are different to other fat because they have a 6-12 carbon atoms where as other fats are normally longer. They are an excellent fast source of energy that can be used for exercise related goals or for general health.

Medium chain fatty acids are emptied rapidly from the stomach and absorbed from the intestine into the blood stream almost as fast as glucose, this makes them an excellent fuel transport. One of the main benefits of MCTs is that because of their fast rate of digestion they are suggested to be less likely to be stored as body fat. Hence, MCTs are of particular interest to people like body builders and other looking to increase their energy intake to maximise lean mass but who wish to minimise increases in body fat.

Another suggested role for the use of MCTs is during endurance events where there energy demands are large. MCTs can provide a fuel source that may potentially spare muscle glycogen and prolong the availability of carbohydrate stores that are essential maintaining a high intensity throughout the competition.
